Institute of construction materials science and Environmental engineering was established at Belgorod State technological university named after V.G. Shukhov on September 1, 2011 on the basis of 2 institutes: the oldest Institute of construction materials science and institute of environmental engineering.

Departments are staffed by highly qualified lecturers. The Institute staff includes about 230 lecturers, researchers, graduate and doctoral students, including 37 doctors, professors and 81 associate professors. 92% of the number of faculty members (112 people) have academic degrees and titles.

The Institute has well-known scientists and specialists: Honored Worker of Science Prof. Luginina I.G., Honored Worker of Higher School of Russia Prof. V.K. Klassen, doctor of technical sciences Professor Minko N.I., Professor German I.I., Prof. N.A.Shapovalov, Ph.D., professor Kudeyarova N.P., Honored inventor of Russia Prof. V.I.Pavlenko, honored ecologist of RF Ph.D., associate professor Koval V.N. About 30 faculty members of the institute are awarded by the Ministry of Education with the title "Honorary Worker of Higher Professional Education of the Russian Federation".

Scientific schools have been formed: in chemical engineering cement - under the guidance of Prof. V.K Klassen, professor, Luginina I.G., in the technology of ceramics, glass and ceramics under the leadership of Prof. Evushenko E.I., professor Pivinski J.E., Professor Minko N.I.; modification in highly dispersed systems under the leadership of Professor N.A.Shapovalov, in the field of radiation materials - under the guidance of Prof. V.I.Pavlenko, in the field of environmental engineering - under the direction of Prof., Sverguzova S.V. The above Scientific schools are known not only in Russia but also abroad.

The Institute staff has published about 250 books, textbooks and manuals for students, engineers and researchers specializing in field of building materials and natural resources management, industrial ecology, life safety and protection in emergencies. About 350 patents for inventions have been obtained.

The facilities include modern laboratory and computer equipment. The institute has trained 9100 cement engineers, ceramics endineers, glass-makers, environmentalists, specialists in technospheric security and protection in emergencies.

The institute has trained 850 students from 40 regions of Russia , CIS and non-CIS countries: Bolivia, Panama, Venezuela, Tunisia, China, Kenya, Oman, Somalia, Ecuador, Congo, Bolivia, Angola, Nigeria, Mongolia, Peru, Palestine, Zambia. Institute graduates are currently working in major scientific and industrial centers of Russia, CIS and foreign countries.

Research activity:

Research activity of the Institute is aimed at improving silicate technology production techniques, engineering, environmental protection, occupational safety, process and production safety, protection of the population in emergency situations, creating low-waste, waste-free, resource-and energy-saving industries,  development of environmentally safe equipment.

Department of Technology and cement composite materials:

  • high-temperature interaction in oxide systems;
  • energy saving processes in cement industry, technology, binders and other materials of construction and steel industries;
  • energy-saving technology and industry-integrated use of wastes and substandard raw materials;
  • optimization of heat and mass exchange processes;
  • obtaining low-temperature binders and hardening processes .

Department of Glass and Ceramics Technology:

  • development of technology for production of protective and decorative coatings on articles of wall building materials using low-temperature plasma torch;
  • physico-chemiscal technology of glass, glass-ceramic and composite materials;
  • oxidation processes in the technology of glass and glass-ceramic materials;
  • physico-chemical properties of the glass and glass ceramic materials with modified properties;
  • energy and resource efficiency processes in glass industry;
  • use of recycled products in the manufacture of glass and glass products;
  • upgrading of technology and product quality in industrial plants;
  • development and improvement of technology and design of delicate , structural and artistic ceramics;

Life Safety Department:

  • safety monitoring of natural and technical systems in the region of Kursk Magnetic Anomaly in the development of mineral deposits;
  • investigation of accidents in buildings, structures at industrial facilities;
  • developing integrated gas cleaning methods in the construction materials industry.

Department of Environmental engineering:

  • development of environmentally sound disposal method for sludge wastewater treatment;
  • development of energy-saving technologies for processing domestic and industrial waste;
  • study of the influence of microbiological and physico-chemical factors on the durability of building materials and their forecasting their biocorrosion sustainability;

Department of protection in emergency situations :

  • development of mathematical and structural- functional models of risk management, disaster and crisis situations;
  • developing methods of forecasting and risk assessment and consequences of emergency and crisis situations;
  • development of new methods and systems for the protection of man and his environment in emergency situations.

 

Department of inorganic chemistry:

  • air conditioning and recycling of industrial radioactive waste of nuclear power engineering;
  • materials science of construction industry ( gypsum and autoclave products);
  • materials science in nuclear power engineering ( radiation protective materials);
  • structural Polymer concrete for functional purposes;
  • modification of systems based on heavy metal oxides;
  • omplex treatment of water environments;
  • radiation and biological monitoring of the environment;
  • simulation of physical processes of interaction of gamma photons with crystals and metal polymers;
  • polymer composites intended for aerospace applications.
  • regulation of aggregate stability and rheological properties of mineral suspensions;

The scientists of the Institute are engaged in research by the order of Russian Federal Education Agency, as well as in the analytical  target program "Development of Scientific Potential of Higher Education" and Federal Target Program "Scientific and research academic staff of innovative Russia".

Annual funding for research grants, scientific and technical programs and agreements with companies exceeds 27 million rubles.

Departments of the institute maintain close cooperation with  construction, mining and nuclear industry companies.

From the very first year of tuition the students are actively involved in research under the guidance of professor’s staff. The best students of the Institute participate in national and international scientific conferences.
